Great spot for a Kranjska sausage lunch.
Bar Arkade is a busy cafe with a deliciously simple menu situated next to the city market in between Prešeren Square and the iconic dragon bridge. To find it simply look for the covered arcade on the market side of the Ljubljanica, just to the east of the three bridges.
It’s one of a handful of bars along this stretch and because they’re so close with adjacent tables outside, it’s often difficult to know in which bar you’re sitting. The best bet is to look at the menus in the windows and if in doubt, to scan the QR codes on the tables which will open a digital version of the same.
My choice here is the traditional Kranjska klobasa, the sausage named after the small city a half hour from Ljubljana where it was popularised. it’s delicious and comes with fresh bread and two relishes. Enjoy the mustard but disrespect the spicy horseradish at your peril. They serve a variety of cocktails too by a small draft beer or “točeno pivo” is probably the right accompaniment.
There’s a seated section next to the bar that sits above the river and can be a little cooler in summer. But as with all the bars in this arcade, it’s a great spot to relax and watch the bustling city go by, especially on Saturday when the incredible city market is in full swing.
