Great French menu in a relaxed part of the city.
Le Petit Cafe is a perfect place for food and drink, especially if you want to step slightly away from the city centre. it’s only a three minute walk from the Ljubljanica but to me, seems to have a more local feel and is a popular spot for office workers to grab a quick lunch.
The cafe has been there for 25 years and I’m never disappointed by the food or atmosphere. It’s located near to the historic križanke theatre and next to the “Monument to the French Illyrians” designed of course, by Jože Plečnik. Le Petit Cafe is a roadside restaurant but the Trg francoske revolucije (or French Revolution Square) on which it sits is a quiet side street so not unpleasant. There are perhaps 15 tables outdoors and two stories of carefully decorated cafe inside.
It’s a popular nightspot, especially for drinks when an event is taking place at the theatre. But I prefer to go here for breakfast or lunch. In the mornings, they serve a variety of authentic French breakfasts including croque monsieur, yoghurts and breads but my choice is always the delicious eggs Benedict. You can upgrade to the eggs royal if you prefer salmon and avocado.
For lunch, the pasta selection is great but I usually just opt for the Kraljevi sendvič or “King’s sandwich” with roast beef, mustard and sun dried tomatoes. It’s around €5 and one of the most filling sandwiches I’ve eaten. There’s a photo below where I ordered it with fries just in case but definitely didn’t need to.
After eating, there’s a great coffee shop next door if you fancy a slight change of scenery. Or you can just walk a couple of hundred metres down to the old town and take your pick of places instead. Le Petit cafe is a great spot.
